Obituary

It is with deep sadness, but also with immense gratitude for a life so beautifully lived, that we announce the peaceful passing of Verla Delcourt (née McQuaig), age 94, of Buckingham, Quebec, on Sunday, August 16, 2026.

Born on May 7, 1932, in Buckingham to Leonard and Evelyn (White), Verla lived a life grounded in love, family, friendship, and quiet strength. She had a generous heart and a remarkable gift for making those around her feel cared for, welcomed, and loved. Her greatest joy was her family, and she devoted herself wholeheartedly to the people she held dear.

In 1954, Verla married the love of her life, Gerald Delcourt, and together they built a home filled with laughter, warmth, patience, and love. Gerald was a well-known and beloved musician, and music became a very special part of their life together. In fact, music was important enough that when it came time for Verla and Gerald to marry, they chose a Monday wedding because, of course, you couldn’t schedule a wedding when there was music to be played! It was a fitting beginning to a life together in which music, family, friends, and good times were always intertwined.

One of nine children, Verla was a woman who rarely put herself first. She spent many years working at Rainbow Plastics and, later, at Rossy, but her most meaningful work was the love and care she gave so freely to her family and friends. She was the person others could count on, the one who was always thinking of someone else, always ready to lend a hand, offer encouragement, or simply be there. Her kindness was not something she talked about; it was simply who she was.

Verla leaves behind a family who will miss her more than words can express: her sons, Rodney (Karen) and Richard (Connie Corrigan); her grandchildren, Lauren (Erik Wright), Nicholas (Shannon Belecque), Mallory (Kyle Flavell), Jacob and Lincoln; and her precious great-grandchildren, Adley, Myles, River, Brooks, and Mabel. She will also be lovingly remembered by many dear nieces and nephews and by the many friends whose lives she touched. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Gerald, and by all of her siblings.

Her family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the compassionate staff of Jardins Lafrenière and Résidence Le Monarque for the care, kindness, and dignity they provided to Verla over the last couple of years, and especially during her final days.

A service celebrating Verla will be held at 11:30 am on September 6, 2026, at St. Andrews United Church in Buckingham. In lieu of flowers, donations in Verla’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Résidence Le Monarque.

Verla leaves behind much more than memories. She leaves a legacy of love—a family brought together by her devotion, homes filled with music and laughter, countless moments shared with family and friends, and the lasting reminder that a life of kindness, generosity, and putting others first is a life that truly matters.

She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered—and perhaps, somewhere, there is still music playing on a Monday.
